10 Day Spring Detox

But in reality your gut quickly absorbs fructose and glucose, the fiber-free sugars in soda. 3. Take supplements as directed
4. Prepare a fruit juice or vegetable smoothie for breakfast (see recipe at the end of this article)

9. Write in a journal to record your feelings
10. Get seven to eight hours of sleep a day

The Detox Healing Components

Here's everything you need to know on how to complete each step:

Step 1: Track Your Results

Every morning, before your walk and before you eat breakfast, write down the following measurements. Research shows that simply recording these numbers multiplies your success and increases weight loss:

- Weight
- Waist (measure at the widest part, around your belly button)
- Hips (measure around the widest part)
- Thighs (measure around the widest part)

Every night, write down the following:

- How long you slept the night before and how well you slept (soundly or restless)
- What you ate that day
- How many minutes of exercise you did

- Any effects you notice related to any or all of the above

Step 2: Walking (or another form of exercise)

Do your daily exercise first thing in the morning to jump-start your metabolism and get your day started off on the right foot. Steps 4-8: Meals and Snacks

Here are a few tips you can choose when you are preparing your food:

Breakfast: Start your day with a fresh juice or veggie smoothie. This will kick-start your metabolism and help you burn more calories throughout the day, accelerating weight loss. Put in healthy fats that will keep your blood sugar balanced and your energy high throughout the day. Make hearty, satisfying shakes. If you need a little inspiration to start, we've provided a recipe at the end of the article.

Lunch: We suggest having a low fat, protein filled soup or salad for an easy to make, healthy day choice for lunch.

Dinner: Choose a simple, healthy recipe with a lean protein (chicken, fish or tofu) and non-starchy vegetables (steamed, sautéed, grilled or roasted). Eat a variety of vegetables and as many as your heart desires at each meal. Tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, greens of all types, asparagus and green beans are all excellent choices.

Snacks: If you are hungry between meals, a snack consisting of fruit and a small handful of nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pecans or macadamia nuts is a great choice. Another healthy snack are raw vegetables (sliced raw vegetables, such as carrots, cucumbers, peppers or celery) with hummus or guacamole.

Step 9: Time to Reflect

Each evening, set aside a quiet moment to write about your day's experience. How are you doing? What has excited or frustrated you? What changes do you notice in your body? In your mood? This is your private time to let your thoughts and feelings flow - write whatever comes to mind without filtering or holding back! Research shows that writing has significant transformative powers to heal.

Step 10: A Good Night's Sleep

Sleep

During this ten day detox, you want to get at least seven (but ideally eight) hours of sleep per night. Remember, lack of sleep not only hurts your cognitive function and health; it causes sugar and carbohydrate cravings. Getting enough restful sleep is a powerful tool to stop cravings and promote weight loss.

Listed below are some of our favorite tips for relaxing and falling asleep easily:

- Go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day to establish a regular sleep pattern.
- Remove electronics from your bedroom. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary that brings you peace and quiet at the end of your busy day.
- Create total darkness. Remove or cover lighted clocks or electronic digital displays.
.- Get at least 20 minutes of sun exposure a day, preferably first thing in the morning. Sunlight penetrates your eyes and prompts your brain to release specific chemicals, such as melatonin, that are essential for healthy sleep cycles and balanced moods, and help prevent premature aging.
- Do not eat within three hours of bedtime. Eating a large meal before bed will result in a poor night's sleep. Energy will be shifted to digesting your meal instead of the repair and healing that is supposed to take place at night.
- Avoid bright, stimulating screens before bed, as they alter your brain's natural sleep chemicals. Don't check your email, read on your iPad or check your phone. Watching TV right before bed can also significantly interfere with sleep.
- Use herbal therapies. Try 300 to 600 milligrams of passionflower (Passiflora) or 320 to 480 milligrams of valerian root extract (Valeriana officinalis) one hour before bedtime.

Step 11: Hydrate

Be sure to drink at least eight glasses of clean, filtered water throughout the day to help control appetite and flush out metabolic and environmental toxins through the kidneys. Try drinking two glasses of water before eating. If you wish, you can also drink hot water with a squeeze of lemon or organic green tea such as OnkoTea® throughout the day.

Step 12: Step Away from the Screen

Turn off the TV. Put your smartphone on silent. Disconnect from the Internet. For the next ten days, except for all essential communications, take a break from technology and the news. Spend time with your family, friends or simply immerse yourself in your thoughts. Your sense of well-being, your health and your waistline will thank you.

- 1 kiwi (firm, not too soft), peeled and halved
- ¼ avocado
- 4 tablespoons chia seeds (see note below)
- ½ lime
- ¼ cup packed fresh mint leaves
- ½ cup ice (optional)
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup packed spinach or kale

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until smooth.

NOTE: To activate the enzymes in the seeds and nuts in any smoothie recipe for easier digestion, you can soak them in advance for at least 30 minutes, preferably overnight.

Recipe: Chicken Soup
Servings: 4
Time to prepare: 15-20 minutes
Time to cook: 55 minutes

- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 small chicken, cut into quarters (remove giblets; optional: remove skin)
- 3 medium carrots, peeled and chopped
- 4 stalks celery, diced
- 2 medium onions, diced
- 4 cups low sodium chicken stock
- salt and freshly ground black pepper to season
- 1 cup kale or spinach
- 1 cup chopped fresh parsley

Heat oil in a pot over medium heat. Brown chicken for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Remove and set aside. Add vegetables (minus kale or spinach) to pot and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Return chicken to pot, add chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for about 45 minutes or until chicken begins to fall off the bone (you can add more liquid). Remove the bones. Skim fat from top with a ladle. Season with salt and pepper. Add the kale or spinach and let it wilt. Add the parsley and serve with a green salad.
